Fentanyl is an opioid 50 times more potent than heroin. It now accounts for more than 30% of opioid overdoses nationally and in Marin, there were 19 deaths attributed to fentanyl poisoning in 2019. Fentanyl is no longer just an additive to heroin as it is showing up in every illegal drug including meth and cocaine. Recently, counterfeit Percocet pills were found to have caused a fentanyl overdose in a Marin resident. Click here to read the Public Health notice.
At The Spahr Center, we believe in Harm Reduction. We recognize the harmful effects of illicit drug use but refuse to simply ignore them or condemn the user. We offer strategies to prevent disease and overdose such as using safer injection supplies, Fentanyl test strips and the opioid overdose reversal agent, Narcan. Fentanyl overdoses happen more quickly and are much more lethal than other street drugs. Narcan needs to be readily available in case someone loses consciousness. Our clients reported 30 overdose reversals in 2019 from the 425 kits distributed. Don’t hesitate to learn more. We distribute Narcan kits to anyone who uses or has a friend/family member who uses drugs. Call Andy or Rhiannon at 415-886-8556 to set up a brief training and get your Narcan kit.
